Orphaned by father and mother, born and raised in poverty, Samuel tries like everyone else, to live. To satisfy the desire aroused by his rapid conversion, he decides to drown his youth, colored by misery, in a seminary. Discouraged to lead a life that does not correspond to his adequacies, Samuel abandons the quest for service at the altar that he has pursued so ardently for five years. He finds himself between the promise of a particularly austere European-style life and the weight of life weighing on his insufficient resources for survival. Both extremes plunge the young man into a kind of "rational" depression. He has to commit suicide. But to do so, he must find a valid rational motive...
